Chronic maintenance dialysis is not available for many patients in a number of developing countries in Asia, Africa, and South America. Patients living in remote areas may not have access to dialysis. Kidney transplantation may be the only viable option for long term renal replacement therapy in many areas of the world. Transplantation is the most cost effective form of renal replacement therapy and offers a superior quality of life compared to dialysis.
