The authors review the effect of fluorides on preventing the caries and their association with dental fluorisis. It was found that there is slight and inconsistent evidence that the fluoride supplements prevent dental cavities in primary teeth. There is however evidence that suggests that the fluoride supplements are helpful in preventing caries in permanent teeth. It is necessary to re-examine the current recommendations for use of fluoride supplements during the first six years of life.
