If you feel as though your child’s mental health isn’t as good as it could be, then now is the time for you to take action against that. This guide will show you what steps you can take to try and help your child while ensuring that they get the help and support they actively need.
Chat about The Way they Feel
The first thing you need to do is talk to them about the way that they feel. The more you talk to them about the way they feel, the less likely they are to try and bottle things up and ultimately let problems get them down. It’s a good idea to get into the habit of actually asking your child how they feel, so they become accustomed to the big feelings they have. If your child is used to talking to you about the way that they feel, then this will make it easier for them to get things off their chest and ultimately feel less down and anxious overall.
Keep a Routine
You must try and keep a solid routine for your children, if you can. You have to set aside regular time for just the two of you if possible. This way, you can try and make the routine as predictable as possible, and so you can make sure that they can be told about any significant changes. Things like this are critical if you want to help your child, and it also gives them a chance to try and process and work through any emotions they may be experiencing.
Set Time Aside
Another thing that is quite good to do, as part of your routine, is to set time aside for the two of you. It doesn’t have to be every day, but you do at least need to make sure that you are trying to do something fun. You need to try and help them feel loved and secure, and at the same time, you also need to talk to them about any worries and concerns they may have. Children and young people are far more likely to talk to you when you are doing a parallel activity with them. This could be driving in the car, or it could be something simple like doing crafts together. Things like this can be huge for your child, so try and keep that in mind if you can.
Keep them Active
Keeping your child active is again so important. Getting outdoors and burning off energy will work wonders for their mood, and it will also work wonders for yours. If you know that you are due to go on a family walk, then you need to try and get them involved with it. If you have a garden, then try and let them play outside, and if you have a large outdoor space, try and engage in some family sport together. If you can do this, then you will find it easier than ever to not only help them, but to also help yourself. You also need to let them play. It may not seem like they are playing or when they are being noisy and making a mess, but it really is good for them. It’s also vital for their mental well-being. If you find that you don’t know how to engage with your child, or if you feel as though they play in a very specific way, then it could also be worth getting them assessed. Autism assessments are very easy to get done, and you would be surprised at how easy it is for you to not only get the support you need, but also to make sure that your child is being adequately supported with their mental health and any struggles they may be experiencing.
Spend Time with Family
It’s also a good idea for you to spend time with your family and your friends. Spending time with people you love is always a good thing to do, and it is a great way for you to boost your mood as well. It doesn’t have to be a fancy day out either. It may be that you just meet up in the park or that you drive together. You can also have a television night. Either way, if you can try and find ways to get everyone together, then this will help you to not only help boost their mental health, but also make sure that they are being given the help they need to move forward as a whole.
Encourage them to Join In
You should also do your bit to try and encourage your child to join in, where possible. Most kids like to experiment, and they also like to take part in new activities. If you want to help yourself here, then you need to try and encourage them to be both creative and adventurous. You can encourage them to take part in sports clubs, but at the same time, you can also ask them if there is anything that they may be interested in trying out as well. If you can do this, then you will find that it is easier for you to find new things that they love, while encouraging them to pursue their special interests.
Give Them Something to be Excited About
Everyone needs something to look forward to and to be excited about. At the end of the day, it could be something simple like one of their favourite meals, or it could be something like having time with you, or going to a fun event at the end of the month. If you want to help yourself here, then you need to try and do what you can to try and encourage your kids to try and take part and talk openly about the things they enjoy. If you can do this, then you will find that everyone is happier as a result, and that you are able to meet their needs more efficiently.
